President Greg Winters opened the meeting with a work party and plant sale notice for October 16th from Merkerk Gardens. For members of Merkerk there is a 10% discount on all plant purchases.

We have a possible opportunity to get involved with gardens at various parks in the area, because the County is cutting back on its Master Gardener staffing, because of budget restraints. Jennings Park, in Marysville was named as one possibility where we could get involved and have the opportunity to increase our membership. It was also noted that ARS has grant funds available from time to time for various chapter projects. No action was taken.

The treasurer noted that 30 of our 48 family members have paid their 2005 dues. We wish to welcome aboard Cheryl Arney and Don Smart (Pres. Dist 2) as Associate members of Pilchuck.

Barbara Blankenship reported on a very successful Oso Nurseries Open House the weekend of October 2nd. Cora Zoberst won the Bed & Breakfast outing prize. Congratulations Cora.

Our new District 2 President, Don Smart was introduced and he gave a report on his activities in that position including going to an ARS meeting in Hawaii recently.

Our 2005 bus trip to Oregon is still being put together. This will be an overnight trip similar to our trip to Newport, Oregon a couple years ago.

Loyd Newcomb spoke on the Genesis and Evolution of Newcomb Gardens, with his personal beginnings as a farmer to “evolving” into a full fledged Rhody-holic. Loyd attributed much of his beginnings in Rhododendron hybridizing to meeting Halfdan Lem who tutored him for many years. Loyd also presented a slide show on the development of his 10 acres in Clearview from uncleared land to a beautiful nursery garden. A question and answer period followed.

Fred Kirby said “good-bye” to the chapter members as he heads back to California for the next several months.

There was a successful raffle and auction to close out the meeting.
