Meeting Minutes

October 6, 2005

President Greg Winters was absent so Barbara Blankenship called the meeting to order. There were some guests attending, including Frank Fujioka and his friend. Also Ellen Moon brought a guest with her. Barbara shared with us about the final gathering of the Chapter which was held at her place in Oso. All went well and afterwards we went our ways for the summer.

Shirley Rock gave an update on the upcoming N W Garden Show which will be held at the Convention Center, in Seattle, in February 2006. The Convention Committee is asking for cash donations or reams of colored paper for the show. No action was taken.

Our November meeting will be at the Whidbey Island Chapter, Greenbank, Whidbey Is. Everyone is encouraged to bring a pie. The meeting starts at 7PM. Carpools are recommended.

Kathy VanVeen presented a great program on Rhody propagation as done at her nursery in Portland, OR. She emphasized cleanliness in the process of propagating, and had many tips on some easier ways to grow new plants. The VanVeen nursery was started by Kathy’s grandfather in 1926.

The meeting concluded with a raffle and successful plant sale.

Dues

Thank you for getting you dues to the Treasurer in a timely fashion. As it stands now we have 35 paid up members, including Associates. We send out 47 Newsletters each month, so we still have a few folks who need to send in their envelopes.

Remember, you can receive Newsletters from other chapters by becoming an “Associate” member of that chapter. The cost is &8 per year. All that money stays with that chapter. Many at Pilchuck can help you find various chapter addresses.

Guest Speaker

We are very grateful to have Kathy VanVeen at our last meeting. Give credit to those in our chapter who arrange for speakers like Kathy. It’s rewarding for all of us because our chapter is more than a social club. It is a place to come and learn and to share. Got any puzzling questions about your garden? Help us find answers to your garden dilemmas by sharing what you come to our meetings for.

ARS Quarterly

We received an e-mail from Loyd & Eddie Newcomb that they have a “treasure” in past issues of the ARS Quarterly Bulletin, dating back from 1947 to 1981, and ARS Journals from 1982 till present. They would like to give them away, but also stated they may have a “collector” value of $4. If you have any ideas on how we may answer this announcement let us know at the next meeting.

The Newcombs now live on Lopez Island in the San Juans, and are busy remodeling their apartment. Their e-mail address is: lenewomb@mac.com

Springtime Bus Trip

Dave Hammond came up with an idea for a day trip next Spring. The trip would include stops in Montesano and Humptulips. There would be three gardens to visit. There was general agreement at the Sept. meeting this trip may be a worthwhile excursion for our chapter. It was mentioned that Oregon Gardens has closed it doors since our last trip
