The meeting was called to order by Pres. Jerry Rock, who introduced Mr. Bob Firestone, as a visitor to our meeting.Fred Kirby and Wayne Lawson are to make contact with the chairperson of the May Farmers Market on Camano Island, to secure a site for our Flower Display during the Mothers Day Weekend this coming May. Wayne had been ill some of January, so this wasn’t accomplished at that time. The Lawsons plan to purchase two 10x10 tents for their own personal needs but will make them available for the Flower Show. Greg Winters gave us an update on the events over at Meerkerk. There have been some drastic changes at the Manager/Board level to redefine the oversight of the Gardens, but the integrity of the purpose of Meerkerk Gardens remains in tact. We are encouraged to submit ideas for our annual Spring Bus Trip to Greg Winters. Your ideas will be published in an upcoming “Newsletter” from which the members of the Chapter will make a selection. Let your imagination go “outside the box”. The business portion of the meeting was followed by a potluck dinner, which, in turn, was followed by a raffle and auction. ___________________________________________________ Presidential Musings Frank Fujioka, well known for his hybrids, will be our guest speaker at the March 1st meeting. We are very fortunate that Frank is local thus his hybrids fit well in the Northwest environment. I have great respect for Frank and his skill as a hybridizer. He tests his plants thoroughly and doesn't register them unless they meet his rigorous standards. I wish more hybridizers followed his standards. Frank Fujioka also has a great sense of humor! You will discover this as you enjoy his presentation. I will say no more because I don't want to give away his antics. The Komo Kulshan Chapter will be joining us. As a bonus they are bringing the treats. Please bring neighbors and friends to see this presentation. I think they might just be inspired to come more often. Our April program will be a DVD of Len Miller's gardens. What is so special about that? He lives in Grove Oklahoma! I like his attitude about rhododendrons, 'There are not bad rhododendrons just bad locations.'. I hope you'll join us on April 5th to see this spectaculare garden via DVD. Our May meeting is usually our picnic. This year our volunteer host is Chuck's Nursery at Oso. The date and time will be announced at the next meeting. Frank Fujioka will be meeting us at the Golden Corral for dinner at 5pm. Anyone wishing to join us please do! |
