The meeting was called to order by President Jerry Rock, who then recognized Mr & Mrs Bill Stipe as our welcome guests. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as read. The treasurer gave a report on our financial standing. Our guest speaker was Mr. Al Elliot, Ornithologist and Mycologist, who spoke on birds of the Northwest and their habits and feeding needs, and also about mushrooms of the area, both edible and poisonous. Mr. Elliot had several books he recommends and several samples of our Northwest mushrooms. Jerry spoke briefly on taking care of our plants and bushes at this time of the year. There was a continuing discussion of our bus trip scheduled for May 18-19, 2008. There many be some additional fees over room and board to cover higher fuel costs. It will take a minimum of 30 people signing up to clear the expected expenses. There was no decision on our ARS Liability Insurance participation at this time, nor was there a report on the happenings at Meerkerk. A request was made via e-mail by Lydia Putnicki, a U of W student doing research on Rhododendron Powdery Mildew. If you would like to participate in her project please contact Mz Putnicki at (206)321-9216. December will be a Christmas party including a gift exchange similar to the exchange parties of the past. There is a pie social sponsored by the Whidbey Island chapter to be held on November 14th in Greenbank, behind the store. If you have any ideas for our January meeting get in touch with Carolyn Hansen. Our Treasurer says that there are a few folks who have not renewed and may not get the journal if they do not do so soon: Dave Hammond, Carolyn Hansen, Steve & Linda Hunt, Gary Lewis, Tom & Sonia Mounsey, Diane Mumaw, Jack Randel, Jane Smith and Greta Wolfe. |
