November Horticulture

By Jerry Rock

Time for cleanup!  Clip off dead branches and any moldy seed pods.  Look for signs of insect damage and remove if severe.  Some insects lay eggs on old leaves so give a quick examination and remove.  Also, winter sun and wind can dehydrate plants, so some may need shelter.  Keep them hydrated if possible.  After long freezes if weather permits a few sunny days, hydrate plants sparingly.  Watch for snow build up to break branches.  You want to prop up branches and remove excess snow.  Remember snow insulates plants so be careful to only remove excess heavy snow.

Getting to Know You

Doug and Donna Keough met and became friends with Lloyd and Eddie Newcomb while living in Clearview, WA.  They found Lloyd and Eddie to be very friendly and generous, and invited them to attend a Pilchuck Chapter meeting.  That was six years ago and they have been rhodoholics ever since.

They reside on five acres along with hundreds of rhododendrons and Acers.
