PILCHUCK CHAPTER - ARS

Meeting Minutes

October 2, 2008

President Barbara Blankenship called the meeting to order in our new meeting place, which is the

Annex Bldg of First Baptist Church, across the street to the South of the church. A big round of

applause for the job Shirley Rock is doing, especially on the “new look” of our Newsletter. Lot’s of

information for us to digest and act upon from issue to issue. The Treasurer’s report was given.

Committee reports: Jerry Rock is in the process of acquiring plants for our annual plant and flower

show in Skagit County next May. There may be some locations changes in Mt Vernon, but nothing

for sure yet.  We have a challenge from ARS to get some kind of door prizes put together for the

Convention next May. We are asked to put together 5 door prizes and one auction item worth

approximately $100.  There was an open discussion on dealing with plant pests (grubs) with various

ideas on ridding our gardens of them.

Greetings to all from Lloyd and Eddie Newcomb, from Lopez

Island, as they sent in their dues for this current season. (Treasurer’s note: Make every effort to get

you dues paid by the November meeting.)

New Business: Cheryl Arney will be demonstrating the making of Swags at our next meeting. If you

wish to participate you are encouraged to bring holly, greens, berries, twigs & cones. You might even consider bringing a glue gun if you wish to participate. We might be able to locate a multiplex outlet

for use on a work table.  Shirley Rock presented a slide show on the many dozens of Fuchsias in her

garden, several of which were made available for the raffle and auction to follow.

Respectfully submitted by

William O. Griswold

William O. Griswold, better known as Bill, left us for that big Rhody garden in the sky on August 31st

at the age of 99.  Bill founded the Griswold Nursery in Kirkland in 1952, where  we have obtained

plants for our spring sales.  The nursery is run by his three daughters, Orine Holm, Linda Malland,

and Garda Griswold.  He was the past president of the Seattle Chapter, ARS and hybridizer of Rhodo-

dendrons and azaleas.  Some of his rhododendron hybrids are Bill Griswold, Doris Griswold, Ella

Carpenter, Linda Malland, Garda’s Blue Ribbon, Lonnie Foley, DAG Cross, Dan Holm, and Anna

Holm.  Some of his azalea hybrids are Dhabi, Garda Joy, May Young, Pamella Malland, Laura Holm,

and Al Holm.  Bill’s obituary will be published in the winter ARS journal.

December Meeting

This is our  holiday get together including a gift exchange.  Pilchuck Fuchsia Society  joins us since many of their members are members of our chapter too.
